Speaker-Elect Jari Askins Keynote
"One-of-Our-Own" to Speak February 16
OLTA is pleased to have as our keynote address at the annual Owners/Managers Meeting "one of our own," State Representative and Speaker-Elect Jari Askins. Rep. Askins was first elected in 1994 to the Oklahoma House of Representatives and immediately became involved in the House leadership, assuming numerous positions of responsibility. She is very well respected on "both sides of the aisle" and continues to influence legislative activities in a variety of areas. Most recently, Rep. Askins was selected by her caucus to serve as Speaker-Elect of the House, set to take this position in January 2005. She will be the first female Speaker of the House in our state's history.
Rep. Askins is the daughter of an OLTA past president, Ollie and Jarita Askins. Born and reared in Duncan, Oklahoma, Askins received her BA in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma and in 1980, earned a J.D. from the OU College of Law. She has been involved in public service in all three branches of government. Rep. Askins served as a Special District Judge for the District Court of Stephens County for eight years. In 1991, the Governor appointed her to the Pardon and Parole Board. Three weeks after her appointment, the Board elected Askins as the first woman Chairman of the Board and she later served as executive director of that same agency. These experiences helped develop criminal and juvenile justice issues as her special expertise.
In addition, Askins has served as Legal Counsel to the Governor of Oklahoma. In addition to all this, Jari is an avid reader, better than average golfer and a loyal Sooner fan. Let's give Rep. Jari Askins, "one of our own," a great OLTA welcome on February 16.
