Oklahoma Basic Abstractor's School
March 9-10, 2004

March 9 and 10, 2004, are the dates set for the newly revised Basic Abstractor's School to be held at Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma City. The course will cover two days with testing for the Abstract License by the State Auditor and Inspector's Office on the afternoon of March 10th. (Participants will need a letter from their employer and the necessary fees to take the test — details with registration to come later.)

The goal of the school is to teach the basics of abstracting principles and practices from understanding the workings of the county offices and the abstract plant through the compiling of an abstract. The participants will also be assisted in gaining the knowledge necessary to pass the Abstract License Exam. Instructors have been working on the school for a number of months and will present a complete program covering the materials in the OLTA ABSTRACTOR'S HANDBOOK that are necessary to understanding the abstracting process. A study guide will also be presented to assist in reviewing for the Abstract License Exam which has been revised based on the new handbook. Handbooks are available from the OLTA office at a cost of $45.50, and will not be provided at the school. Contact the OLTA office directly at 405/840-1944 for your handbook.

The school will be limited to around 40-50 participants and registration forms will be mailed in February, 2004. Get your new employees lined up for the school now — let them begin reading the handbook and preparing for the school and the test. The school will then finalize their understanding and prepare them for the test.

For questions on the Basic Abstractor's School contact the OLTA office at 405/840-1944 or committee members Joy Scheller at 405/422-6016 and Mary Ann Nelson at 405/321-8680.

Legislators Set For February 16 Reception

If you've never attended an OLTA Annual Legislative Reception or if you have never missed attending an OLTA Annual Legislative Reception, this is the year to be sure you are there! This is the last legislative session before "term limits" takes effect in November, 2004, which will dramatically change the make up of the legislature. OLTA will be losing many good friends of the industry and will need to work extra hard to educate and inform the new "freshmen" members after the '04 elections.

But, until that time — mark your calendar for Monday, February 16, 5-6:30 p.m., at The Waterford Marriott Hotel, 6300 Waterford Boulevard, Oklahoma City.

Generally, OLTA is pleased and honored to have more than 35-40% of the legislators attend this annual special event. However, we are making an even greater push this year to invite each legislator personally — not just by written invitation, but by phone call, as well. Legislators will receive their invitations the first day of Session on February 2nd. Take a moment to call your legislator a few days before February 16, tell them you will meet them at the Waterford and plan on attending this very important networking opportunity with our state's leaders. Thank you for your continued involvement.
