President's Message

Dear OLTA Members:

As we are working on OLTA's plans and strategies for the current 2006 Session of the Oklahoma State Legislature, we are becoming increasingly aware of the growing interest of "others" in our business. We expect this could potentially result in a number of bills being introduced that can have a major impact on our business. For example, we have heard specifically that there may be an effort to pass legislation to make Oklahoma "more like Texas, not Iowa." We can all speculate on what this could mean!

As many of you are aware, the political climate at the capitol has and will continue to change with term limits taking effect and impacting the balance of political power in the House and Senate. The playing field has a completely different appearance and that can mean future uncertainties for our industry. The OLTA Legislative Committee, along with our lobbyist, is working diligently to keep on top of the information that we are receiving.

The Board of Directors has appointed a Research Committee to review the Texas and New Mexico laws regarding issuance of title insurance. This committee will be gathering data to consider revisions to the Oklahoma title insurance laws without opening Title 74, while diligently protecting our title plant laws.

The OLTA Board of Directors would encourage your participation and input regarding the direction that you, our members, would like for us to take. Whatever direction we ultimately take, we will need the total cooperation and support of the membership. Thank you for your personal, professional and financial commitments to OLTA and to our industry.
