Past President's Message (2005-2006)
Dear OLTA Members:
As I started to prepare this Presidential Message, I realized that it would probably be the last one that I would be writing for the TitleGram. I also thought this same thing five years ago! Where has this year gone? Let me think...oh yes, I recall. Every waking minute, and there have been lots of those, has been spent on legislative matters.
OLTA has not had to make legislative changes such has occurred this session in over 20 years. And yes, I totally agree that change is difficult and not easily accepted. But, at times change is necessary. We all will agree that we can improve our industry in some manner.
When we were notified by our lobbyist about the issues involving our industry, the leadership of the OLTA took a proactive role for our association. The comments that we were hearing at the capitol at the end of the legislative session were positive regarding our industry, instead of negative.
Throughout this session, I have appreciated the feedback from you, the members, on different issues regarding our legislative efforts. This could have not been done if we would not have had our lobbyist, Clayton Taylor. Clayton's professionalism, knowledge, integrity, and credibility at the capitol is far higher than many lobbyists. As one senator told me, "Your association is being represented by the best." After you have worked with him at the capitol, you will appreciate his outstanding qualities, too.
I have spoken to you of the hours that the Research Committee and the Board have put into the issues that have arisen this term, but all of the OLTA committees have been extremely productive. Until you become actively involved with the association, you do not realize that there are numerous people involved on a variety of committees.
If you are asked to be on the Board or a committee, please remember a quote from Lucille Ball, "If you want a job done, ask a busy person." We are all busy, but if you care about our industry, you can find time to make a difference. It makes me think of the saying, "It takes a village." I am glad to know that I have village people!
